5. Dream Interpretation Is God’s Business
God’s dreams are always sent for a specific reason. All of God’s Bible dreams were totally focused on God keeping His covenant with Abraham. God prophesied about this. He said, Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[1] That’s why God’s Bible dreams all have national, international and eternal significance. God is a covenant keeping God!
God’s dreams are never just sent so the dreamer might discover their destiny and feel good about themselves. God’s dreams are all about Sovereign Almighty God working out His Own eternal plans and purpose and the created angel Satan failing to stop Him. The key word is purpose, not purposes, and that purpose is Jesus Christ.
At the birth of the Church on the day of Pentecost Peter stood up and told the Jewish nation the last days were upon them. He said,
In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.
I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
The sun will be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and glorious
day of the Lord.
And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved.[2]
Here, God is revealing the real reason for the Holy Spirit being poured out upon all mankind. Peter is saying the whole purpose for dreams, visions, prophecy and signs and wonders is that people will call upon the name of Jesus Christ and be saved.
It’s all about Jesus.
In fact if you have eyes to see, every dream in Scripture is all about Jesus.
Everything is about Jesus!
When God said, Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him,[3] He was sharing the unfolding of His purpose for world history. God’s intended way for the nations of the earth to be blessed through Abraham is by them calling upon the name of Abraham’s descendent Jesus Christ!
Abraham’s seed line was vitally important. God’s purpose for every dream in the Bible is that all nations will have an opportunity to call upon the name of Jesus Christ and be saved.
Bible dreams were sent to enable the dreamer to do God’s will. Every Bible dream contained a personal implication for the dreamer but these were not touchy, feely, find your calling and don’t worry be happy, kind of sentiments. The truth was, if the dreamer obeyed God’s dream they and their people were blessed, if they disobeyed they were cursed.
There are only three recorded dreams from Satan. One debatable dream is when Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. This dream had personal, national, international and eternal significance. The two other dreams from Satan were sent to Eliphaz and Job. These were two personal satanic attacks with no national, international or eternal significance.
Nowadays there is little understanding of God’s covenant and God’s plans and purpose for families, communities and nations. Instead, in the West, we have a Greco-Roman worldview amplified and augmented by both the Renaissance and the Reformation.
Nowadays our focus and expectations are firmly fixed on the privileges and potentials of the individual. We tend to believe that God, if he exists at all, is only there to meet our every need. You know the kind of thing; God has a wonderful plan and purpose for you life. Just put some money in the bucket!
Many of us even read the Bible as if it were some sort of a self-help book written for our individual encouragement and success.
The truth is, the vast majority of Scripture was written to the family seed line of Abraham both natural and spiritual. That is, the Jews, Jerusalem and Abraham’s spiritual children the Body of Christ. In fact, only two Bible letters were ever written to individuals, Timothy and Titus, and their purpose was to equip the church to preach sound doctrine to the nations.
God is still firmly focused on the great commission of bringing salvation to the nations. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords and He still rules sovereignly in the affairs of people and nations,
Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
for wisdom and power belong to Him.
He changes the times and seasons;
He removes kings and establishes them.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.
He reveals the deep and hidden things;
He knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with Him.[4]
God is still in the business of saving families and discipling nations,
From one man He made every nation of
men, that they should inhabit the whole
earth; and He determined their
appointed times and the boundaries of
their lands. God intended that they
would seek Him and perhaps reach out
for Him and find Him, though He is not
far from each one of us.[5]
There are around forty billion new dreams on planet earth every single day. How many of these do you think are from God? Would you recognise a God dream if you saw one?
It’s not going to get any easier. Nowadays, we possibly stand on the threshold of the biggest threat to Christian theology since Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species.
Artificial Intelligence has now arrived on the world scene and is able to spot art forgery better and quicker than human experts. AI can also diagnose dementia, skin cancer and diabetes far sooner than medical professionals. Today’s smart systems are also better at ascertaining a person’s state of mind far better than their spouse or other family members and we are really only in the beginning stages of this revolution.
Daily, things are accelerating and modern technology’s capabilities are exponentially expanding. Ninety percent of the world’s data has been created in the last couple of years and AI just keeps rolling on, an unstoppable snowball of unbelievable proportions. Russia’s President Putin claims the frontrunner in this field of is likely to be the next world leader.
Artificial Intelligence is already being used by governments and power elites to control and rule humanity. Think China! But the problems will really begin if and when AI becomes sentient and autonomous. There is a growing concern amongst informed parties that AI systems might someday become fully sentient, rational agents—beings with emotions, consciousness, and self-awareness.
The theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawkins, told the BBC in 2004,
The development of full artificial
intelligence could spell the end of the
human race. Once humans develop
artificial intelligence, it would take off
on its own, and redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate. Humans, who are
limited by slow biological evolution,
couldn't compete and would be
superseded.
Sounds like another plan from the god of this world who has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe.[6]
Nowadays we see this blinding spirit at work on the Internet. AI desires our undivided attention and truth is unimportant in this process.
Facebook is an example. The goal of Facebook’s algorithms is keep us on their platform. Facebook has no interest whatsoever in the truth.
The world’s media has become even more unreliable. Fake news and filter bubbles abound. Truth is fallen in the street.[7]
AI systems can now create content, create faces, compose texts, produce tweets, manipulate images and clone voices and engage in smart advertising.
The software Deepfake is even capable of seamlessly inserting people’s faces on moving video footage in order to create a lie. Seeing and hearing is no longer believable, no longer reliable. Who can know the truth?
Some Christian theologians believe the creation of non-human autonomous robots will disrupt religion at a mind-boggling level. If AI robots were to be accepted as free-willed beings then traditional theology would be challenged in unimaginable ways. For example, If AI says, I now believe in God, how do we respond? Will we cast out its demons and baptise it? Did Jesus also die for artificial intelligence? Can AI be saved?
Traditionally Christians have believed that all creation is intended to glorify God so if AI is considered to be sentient will we then have robots filling our empty pews, worshipping God and caring for the poor?
Will AI teach, preach, pray, prophecy, speak in tongues and interpret tongues. The next big AI gadget planned to supersede the mobile phone will be the personal assistant. It’s intended we’ll all have one within the next ten years. Will yours be a Christian one? Will it interpret your dreams?
This may not as far fetched as you might think. Already there are AI platforms that interpret dreams on the Internet. They have access to all the world’s dream symbols. At the moment they mainly focus on common and natural and dreams. Common dreams like,
• Teeth falling out
• Frequent nightmares
• Being back at school
• Losing your purse or wallet
• Horses
• Tornadoes and storms
• Falling
• Flying
• Drowning
• Bathroom dreams
• Being chased
• Someone dying
• Earthquakes
• Spiders
• Tidal waves or flooding
• A deceased relative
• House issues
• Snakes
• Dogs
• Car issues
• Returning to a past relationship
• Naked in public
• Alligators
• Running late
• Unprepared for a test
• Forgetting something important
AI is interpreting common dreams today and soon it will do this better than any human being because AI is daily becoming more powerful due to its exponential improvement. The world’s percentage of non human intelligence is daily exploding.
It’s as if the Tree Of Knowledge of Good and Evil has been released to roam the networks of the world and consume whosever will open themselves up to it. The business magnate Elon Musk, who is very close to the cutting edge of this new technology has said, AI scares the hell out of me!
I believe AI definitely functions from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. I also believe, The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.[8]
AI might well be able to rebuild the tower of Babel and harness all the intelligence in the world but it will never be able to interpret a symbolic God given dream.
As Joseph says, Do not interpretations belong to God?[9]
This was confirmed by Daniel who told King Nebuchadnezzar,
No wise man, enchanter, magician or
diviner can explain to the king the
mystery he has asked about, but there is
a God in heaven who reveals
mysteries.[10]
A correct interpretation of a symbolic God given dream is a sovereign activity of God’s Holy Spirit. All God’s symbolic dreams are from the mind of God and as Paul reminds us,
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who knows a person’s
thoughts except their own spirit within
them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of
God.[11]
As the Good News Version aptly puts it,
Interpreting dreams is God’s business.[12]
