4. How To Use This Book

God’s Bible Dreams is a big doorstopper of a book packed full of all sorts of interesting insights and important facts and revelation about God’s dreams and God’s plans and purpose for His dreams.

I don’t expect people to chronologically read straight through, though the diligent reader would definitely benefit from doing so.

The main purpose of the book is to make Christians very familiar with all of God’s dreams and God’s plans and purpose for His dreams.

I believe this book will equip the reader to better recognize and understand God’s sovereign dreams and God’s sovereign desires.

This main body of this book consists of an in-depth examination of every dream in the Bible, plus five dreams from the Apocrypha.  It’s interesting how these many disparate dreams all manage to serve the exact same purpose.

At the beginning of the book I include twelve short chapters before we start into the main dreams section.

In Part Two, at the end of the book, I include another twenty-six short essays on other important issues relating to God’s dreams.

My desire is to supply the reader with as much useful material as possible. I know this book is not for the slothful saint but I also believe many diligent Christian trainers will discover new material they will use to exponentially accelerate their own teaching ministries.

I hope they’ll also be inspired to dig deeper and wider into the treasure house of God’s secret wisdom and discover marvellous fresh revelation they can share with the wider Body of Christ.

Below is a thumbnail sketch of each chapter:

Warm Milk And Sleepy Saints - The truth is, there’s always a limit to the amount of revelation we can tolerate or cope with at any one particular time.

The Purpose Of This Book – The purpose is to help train and equip believers in how to recognise a God given dream, how to interpret a God given dream and how to obey a God given dream.

My Dream Qualifications - I’ve had plenty of dreams like Abraham, Abimelek, Joseph, Jacob, Laban, Pharaoh, Balaam, the Midianite soldier, Samuel, Nathan, Solomon, Eliphaz, Job, Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel, Zechariah, St Joseph, the Magi and Pilate’s wife.

How To Use This Book - Suggestions on how to best use this book.

Dream Interpretation Is God’s Business - God’s dreams are always sent for a specific reason. All of God’s Bible dreams were totally focused on God keeping His covenant with Abraham.

God’s Eternal Purpose For Dreams - All Bible dreams concern Jesus in one way or another and the three main characters are always God, Satan and the dreamer.

The Danger Of Individualism - The Holy Spirit and His powerful gifts including dreams were not given for our personal use or for self-promotion. They were provided by Jesus to help us equip His Church to fulfil the Great Commission,

Definition Of A Dream - Although there are over two hundred scriptural references to dreams and visions, biblical writers are not particularly consistent or concerned with precise definitions.

Four Kinds Of Bible Dreams – True dreams, Satanic dreams, False dreams and Natural dreams.

Dreams, Night Visions And Events Covered – This chapter lists all the Bible dreams and a few other important incidents.

How Jesus Interprets Dreams - Jesus told parables and explained to His disciples how to interpret all parables. Parables are just like symbolic dreams.

The McCauley Dream Checklist - This is a personal checklist I created, based on Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians.  This checklist gives a consistency and an accountability to the study of dreams.

God’s Purpose For Abraham - God’s promise to Abraham and his descendants is the foundation of the Gospel message and any real understanding of God’s plans and purpose concerning Jesus Christ depends upon an awareness of this.

The Era of the Dream Interpreter - With the arrival of Jesus as dream interpreter there was an immediate shift from open literal dreams to hidden symbolic dreams.

The Primary Function Of God’s Dreams - The primary function of God’s dreams is so people can hear from God and obey His instructions.

Biblical Dream Interpreters – The people and the angels God used to interpret Bible dreams.

Bible Dream Statistics - Interesting Bible dream data of men and of angels.

It’s All About Jesus! - After a zillion years, when Satan has been defeated and the kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, our primary goal will still be to know Him better.

Satan Hates God’s Dreams - Satan hates God’s dreams because a successful interpretation and application of a God given dream always destroys his work.

Bible Dreams And The Gods - Before creation there’d been a great rebellion in heaven when a third of the Elohim, the gods, rebelled with Satan.

God’s Purposes For Sleep and Dreams - Sleep is a daily necessity and God mercifully allows us all to sleep and dream.

A Short History Of Dreams - The history of dreams is the history of humanity and the history of humanity has always been a war zone of confusion and deception from the gods of this world.

God’s Sovereign Purpose - We need some grasp of the reality of God’s sovereignty in order to correctly understand God’s dreams because every single Bible  dream was sent to fulfil God’s specific sovereign plans and purpose.

God’s Eternal Plans and Purpose  - God always functions out of His own eternal plans and purposes and everything He plans comes to pass.

Satan’s Hindering Purpose - Satan’s  primary focus was to thwart God's plans and purposes for humanity’s redemption.  His main mission was to destroy the promised royal seed of the woman.

The Angel Of The Lord - He’s sometimes called the Angel of the Lord or One like the son of man.  Sometimes He’s called God and sometimes He has no name at all.

Angels In Bible Dreams - Twenty-two of the dreams examined in this book include angels.

God And Jesus In Bible Dreams - Old Testament people who were reported as seeing God were really seeing Jesus in a pre-incarnate form because as John says, No one has seen God at any time.[1]

God’s Purpose And Our Process - The purpose is the reason why God sent the dream and the process is the method we use to try and discern the source of the dream and it’s possible interpretation and purpose.

The Main Function Of Bible Dreams - Only believers receive visions while everyone can have a dream. God’s dreams always carried an authority that demanded a response.

God’s Purpose For Each Bible Dream - His purpose was often to give direction, encouragement, and reassurance. Sometimes He gave orders and instructions.

The Importance Of A Dreamer’s Metron – The word metron refers to our God-given sphere of influence, our God-given responsibilities, concerning family, work, ministry, possessions, inheritance and so on.

God’s Purpose For Each Dreamer’s Metron - God only sends His dreams to a person with the appropriate metron which allows them to implement the dream message.

God’s Purposes For Each Believer’s Metron - All the the Believers were Jewish dreamers from Abraham’s family line. All except Solomon were successful in their calling and metron.

God’s Purposes For Each Non Believer’s Metron - God used Non-Jewish dreamers to prosper, bless and care for his Covenant People

Where Dreams Come From - All the recorded dreams in the Bible come from God apart from a couple from Satan.  I believe Job’s nightmares were attacks from Satan.

The Bible’s Symbolic Dreams - Twenty one Bible dreams require interpretation.   Jesus’ Symbol Replacement Method of Interpretation can be applied to them all.

The Bible’s Literal Dreams - Twenty eight literal dreams were able to be understood and obeyed by the dreamer.

The Timeline of Bible Dreams - There are often hundreds of years between recorded dreams in the Bible.

To recap, the main purpose of this book is to enable Christians to become very familiar with God’s true dreams.

Sometimes key concepts and key phrases are repeated in various chapters. This is done on purpose. I’m aware most people won’t read the book straight through, so that also accounts for some of the repetition of key ideas in different chapters. Regularly you’ll read some version of the words in the list below,

  • God is a Covenant Keeper and a Promise Keeper.

  • God is keeping the Messiah’s seed line on track

  • God is still keeping His Covenant Promises to Abraham about the coming Messiah.

  • God is advancing His Eternal plans and purpose as promised to Abraham.

  • God is showing He is the Most High Sovereign over all earthly kingdoms and powers and principalities.

  • God is keeping His promises to His enemy Satan and His friend Abraham.

  • God is sending the Promised Seed who will crush Satan’s head and bless all nations.

  • God is working His purpose out.

When we study God’s Bible dreams we consistently see God depicted as a covenant keeper and a promise keeper.  He is always keeping His covenant promises to Abraham and His prophetic promises to Eve and Satan.

A study of Bible dreams clearly highlights the reality of God being 100% trustworthy. It also very quickly shifts our focus from our plans and purposes onto God’s plans and purpose.

This book doesn’t claim to be the last word on all the dreams of the Bible. In many ways it’s merely an invitation to walk through a new door of understanding into a vast hall filled with the astonishing treasures of God’s great plans and purpose.

My hope is that others will press further in to discover  many more treasures in greater detail and with greater revelation.

I feel a lot like Peter and John who meet the lame man at the temple gate called Beautiful. When the man asked for money Peter said, Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you.

The truth is, we can only give what we have. Sometimes the person who receives is able to multiply what they have recently obtained.  This pleases the Lord. Afterwards they are sometimes able to feed a great multitude with the result.
